SAWCR, an associate member of SA Rugby, were crowned European Division C champions at a tournament in Skien, Norway, held from 9 to 12 October, where they beat Ireland by 62-29 in the final to claim the gold medal.

As a result, SAWCR – who was rezoned from the Asia-Oceania Conference to Europe Division C earlier this year – has been promoted to compete in Europe Division B in 2026, bringing them one step closer to Paralympic qualification.

“On behalf of SA Rugby, I would like to congratulate SA Wheelchair Rugby for their performances in Norway, we are very proud of them,” said Mr Alexander.

“They have made a remarkable comeback in 2025, showing strong performance and renewed ambition on the international stage, with the ultimate prize, participation in the Paralympic Games, edging closer.

“What makes their performances even more impressive, is that they only re-entered international competition structures after a decade-long absence. Winning in Norway is a big step in the right direction and we believe our team will soon enter the global top tier of wheelchair rugby sides.”
