Olympic Games Sevens

Twelve teams will participate in rugby sevens at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, with South Africa securing their qualification spot by finishing in the top four of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. They will play in Pool C, alongside Ireland, Kenya and the USA. In Pool A, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina and Republic of Korea will contest for the top spot, while Pool B sees Fiji, Great Britain, Canada and the host nation Japan in action.

The history

The announcement that rugby sevens would be included on the Olympic programme was made in Copenhagen in October 2009.The inclusion of rugby sevens for the first time in the Olympic Games at Rio 2016 had a profound effect on the sport, attracting an estimated 30 million new fans globally. In Rio, 12 men's and 12 women's teams played in the inaugural tournament. South Africa played in the men's tournament only. Fiji won the gold medal, beating Great Britain who claimed silver. South Africa outplayed Japan to get bronze.
